Terminal 1, Sydney Airport

Client: SACL
Architect: Cox Architecture
Status: Complete

With the awarding of the duty free lease at Sydney's international terminal building the existing building and infrastructure underwent a major refurbishment. This work included a new building component in the form of the ' Bifurcation Roof ' at the node connecting two of the primary building piers and also significant reconfiguration of the existing building structure. The ' Bifurcation Roof ' is a long span (70 metres) grid shell which efficiently and elegantly spans this central space, this roof form adorns numerous high profile spaces, such as the 1 Bligh Street Atrium. A key consideration throughout the project was to develop designs and construction methodologies which allow this key piece of infrastructure to remain operational throughout the delivery stage.
