Architect: Johnson Pilton Walker

Known as the ARC, this building houses traditional library, classroom, computer and archive facilities. Its architecture provides an inspirational environment for these activities with its transparent glass facades, timber framing and stepped ceilings. The building interfaces with the remainder of the school via a southern forecourt overlooking the schools playing fields. The roof structure spanning the main hall was the focus of the combined efforts of both architect and structural engineer. Pairs of laminated timber beams, reflecting the form of the bookshelves below, fly beneath the ceiling connecting to the roof with plane slender steel cruciforms.  Extensive analyses ( lateral torsional buckling)  of the laminated beams were carried out to minimize their structural dimensions and provide an elegant roof structure.
