Lantern House, Cronulla

Client: Mr and Mrs Knowles
Architect: Dem Gillespies
Status: Complete

The fusing of light and space has achieved a living space with remarkable character, enhanced by the addition of a glass roofed internal staircase utilising glass treads to maximise the penetration of light into all areas of the house. The structure consists of reinforced concrete foundations, slabs and walls with be-spoke steelwork crafted into the fabric of the building. The uninterrupted floor plates maximise the sensational views from all rooms creating a framework to showcase some unusual architectural features including a feature staircase surrounded by glass. The front facade of the house is the most extraordinary element; a 5mm thin ground marble face bonded to glass provides surreal aesthetic and magical natural lighting effects.
