Structural Engineering

First we analyse and then we design:

Analysis is the process of modelling and interrogating the behaviour of the structures we propose to build. The models we build vary from basic first principle ' hand calculations ' to sophisticated numerical models utilising the capacity of contemporary software packages. Analysis is underpinned by a rigorous understanding of nature's forces and how the structure and its materials respond to their actions.

"successful analysis is the combination of a strong grasp of first principles and the intelligent application of the powerful analysis tools that current technology provides."

Design converts the analytical model into structural systems - the force diagram becomes a beam. The designer uses his knowledge of planning, materials and construction methodology to develop the structural systems, again utilising contemporary software packages.

"good design is elegant and buildable"
