Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a 3D digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building facility or asset. In the past five years there has been a significant advance in the capability of commercially available BIM software, such that it is now utilised on all projects in our office.
BIM is much more than a documentation tool, it is firstly a platform to manage the design development and documentation of projects. It is then the basis for project tendering and construction phase management. Finally, it offers significant benefits to the client for the ongoing running and operations of their asset when coupled with the appropriate facilities management tools.
The key consideration with BIM is stake holder management and establishing systems and protocols so as to fully utilise a very powerful tool. The BIM model developed to design, construct and operate 1 Bligh Street Office Tower, Sydney remains the industry benchmark.
